Young athletes looking to get an edge in sports seem to be in a rush to grow up these days. Walk into a local YMCA or something similar and you will see at least a few younger people throwing around weights.
While you can’t fault a young athlete trying to get faster and stronger, when is it too young to build muscle? Well, it really depends on the exercises you are doing. Weight lifting is a lot different than bodyweight exercises, or working out with bands.
When it comes to lifting weights and doing those types of workouts, you should wait until puberty has hit. For most people, that means around high school time. If you are a football player, it can be tempting to start lifting earlier. That opens up a lot of potential hazards though.
The main issue is safety. Lifting is a pretty dangerous activity, especially if you are still just learning. Not only can weights be dropped, but you can also perform wrong movements that end up doing more harm than good.
For younger teenagers, working out using bodyweight exercises or bands is the better way to go. It is safer, more natural and teaches flexibility at a younger age. With the programs that are out there, young people can start developing their muscles without ever having to touch a weight.
Even though there should be some limitations when trying to build a ton of muscle as a younger person, it is never too early to start treating your body well and building up your overall health. Learning small muscle building exercises at a young age gives the athlete a mindset to live a healthy life. Coupled with a proper diet, younger people can eventually graduate to lifting weights and really bulking up if that is what they want to do.
